Darenth Woods

Denehole. A path skirts the Eastern edge of the wood and where the wood swings eastwards, the denehole is located by a tree growing on the edge.   It is about three feet wide through Thanet sand. Six chambers open out at the bottom, those on the East being larger than those on the West side.   Clay "pipes" can be seen at several places.

Denehole.  In the field opposite the wood on this side, and about 50 yards from the wood, is a clump of nettles that marks the opening of another shaft.   This bolls out below the entrance but so much rubbish has been thrown down that a descent- is not possible.

Depressions and banks.  The wood contains a number of depressions, presumably other denehole sites and a number of ancient earthworks, which may well be the boundaries of ancient fields.   One such earthwork skirts the Western edge of the wood, one follows it into the wood the other shaft is found beside it in a clearing.   There is 20 ft. shaft, mostly through chalk, leading to six chambers.   The roof of one chamber has collapsed and  the hole so formed provides an easy entrance requiring no equipment.   Benches have been left at the end of the chambers.
