Southfleet

This village of 1,216 inhabitants is referred to in  the Domesday Book as 'Sudflete'. It was once the head of an inlet of the Thames, and before the Swanscombe marshes were formed the tide ebbed and flowed on land now covered by orchards and hop-gardens

Church Houses. Outside the churchyard is a pleasant row of old houses

St.  Nicholas, the saint of mariners, the parish church stands on a site where in pre-. Christian days a Roman temple existed. The remains of the latter can be seen incorporated in the fabric of the church. The building is in the Early Decorated style and has a tower with six bells.
