In the early 19thcentury when it was the duty of 'highway surveyors tocompel property owners to repair the roads of the parish), the southern part of this area wasthe source of much material in the form of flints whichwere carted from Christian's Fields and laid the foundations of thethoroughfares in the older part of the town.

General Gordon Pub. Gone. was ‘Gay Gordons’. The name keeping in remembrance Gordon's association with the town

Kings Farm Estate was the first council estate built tore-house the inhabitants of the area between Church Streetand West Street, when this area was demolished under slumclearance. The land was bought by the Corporation in 1919
