Christ Church, big in scale, honest brick, cheap. 1889. The Necropolis company was supposed to provide a plot and did so in 1870. Temporary iron chapel was built which leaked. In 1887 the Duchess of Albany laid a foundation stone and the church was consecrated in 1889.. William Unsworth design for a tower which was never built because of monehy.

Council offices on the corner with Church Street. Built in 1906 and outgrown within a couple of years.
Sparrow Park on the corner with High Street. Laid out in 1904 with a war memorial which has now gone.
Duke Street
Laid out in 1896 on land supposed to be used for a church and schools.
Guildford Road
Steep slope which runs along the northern valley of the Wey – a sharp descent with views of the North Downs.
Sovereigns pub was the Railway Hotel 1840 at junction of tracks. Railway Hotel. The first building in New Woking. When the station was built there were no buildings nearby. It opened in 1840 by a local man called Edward Woods
Jackman horticultural firm was next to the railway. Name of clematis
Victoria Arch. When the Southampton Line was built all the railway traffic was concentrated here and it has proved a cause of congestion ever since.
Council offices in a rag bag of huts between here, York Road and Mount Hermon Road. Located there in 1939 and still there in the 1980s.
Heathside Farm Estate.
This includes land to the east of White Rose Lane which forms its boundary. The owners sold much of the estate for building in 1882
Heathside Road
The road which ran along the heath before the railway came. It had to fit somehow into the Necropolis Company’s plan. They began to sell common land here from the railway estate in 1859 but take up was slow.

Hillview Estate
Developed in the 1890s by the Suburban Land Company east of Guildford Road between the Hoe Stream and Heathside Road.
Maybury Road
Station was sited in a way that there was no room for expansion and this was down to the plans of the Necropolis Company who wanted posh housing only. The railway wanted to rebuild and enlarge the station in the mid-1880s but the Highways Board would not allow it. The end of the road was renamed Broadway in 1923

Lynton, H.G.Wells
Woking (Woking Common) Station. 1st May 1838. Between main line destinations and West Byfleet on South West Rail. The railway company did not initially design the line for suburban traffic. line from Nine Elms built by Brassey in 1838 to coincide with the Epsom races. Originally called Horsell for old Woking. Last rebuilt 1937. South now the front but it was the Necropolis Co side. Road routes all go under the railway. Victoria Arch used to be Railway arch
Albion Hotel. Rebuilt 1897. it had been opened in 1856 by Reuben Percy who had previously had a pub in Horsell.

Bunker was located within the Divisional office hut complex located at the down side of the line at the London end of Woking Station. It was partly buried with an earth covering. The switchboard remained on the upper floor of the Down side station building through the war.

Oriental Road
It had to fit somehow into the Necropolis Company’s plan. Named because of Leitner’s Oriental Institute. It had earlier been Maybury Heath Lane and had been a track near Heathside Farm.
Woking Lodge. Built 1857 as one of the first houses built in the area. Built by John Raistrick a retired railway contractor.

Woking
Woking shows how the coming of the railway can displace the centre of a settlement. Before 1850 the core of Woking was at Old Woking. The London and South Western Railway built a station on the heath two miles from the there in 1838 and for twenty years no development took place near the station apart from the Railway Hotel. Within the next twenty years a grid-iron settlement was built north of the railway. Woking is thus a Victorian commuters' town, in vermilion, blue and yellow brick. south of the railway an estate was developed in the 1890 and has grown in the 20th with detached houses in large gardens providing an urban rusticity favoured by the business community. Some land is owned by the Necropolis Co. and the housing was built by them. They had an Act of Parliament to purchase 2,600 acres and set up as a sort of Building Society and with sweeping powers to run the town. All common rights were lost except in a few areas. Woking is a good centre for golf as well as boating and fishing on the Wey, and the Basingstoke Canal.
W. E. Henley, the poet, died at Woking in 1903.
Odeon: A Top Rank Luxury Theatre in the early Sixties but it was a drab former Astona. Crompton Organ in 1932.
Ritz Cinema had the First Ramsay Organ 3-6 [7] + Melotone design in 1937
