Hatchlands. A Charming brick Georgian mansion standing in a park of 250 acres, the property of Mr. Harry Stuart Goodhart Rendel. built in 1756-8 for Admiral Boscawen, 1711-61, the conqueror of the French fleet at Louisburg, Cape Breton, in 1758.Improved by Humphrey Repton 1800, and William Kent, Goodhart Rendel lived gave it to the National Trust. Hidden among trees. The fine plaster ceilings and other decoration were executed by Robert Adam, 1760, and alterations were made by Joseph Bonomi about 1790.The music room, in a 17th-century style, was added by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The house contains the earliest recorded decorations in an English country house by Robert Adam, whose ceilings here appropriately feature nautical motifs. On display is the Cobbe Collection, the world's largest group of keyboard instruments associated with famous composers such as Purcell, J. C. Bach, Chopin, Mahler.
