Tatsfield

Church Hill

Tatsfield Church. The church was provided by the new lord of the manor after the Conquest for his own and tenants’ use.  Most notable on a dip slope parish like this and built small and contiguous with the manor. In clump of landmark beeches with Magnificent view over the Weald. It is isolated from the village but the highest church in Surrey. In the 19th partly restored. It has Two Norman windows and in the chancel is a chalk window of 1220.

Paynesfield Road

Subsidence outside the home of a Mr. Raymond Smale. It first occurred in 1980 and was filled in. In 1986 a bigger hole appeared and was also filled in. In October after heavy rain the third subsidence occurred and was 10 ft. deep and 30 ft. wide.

Tatsfield

A straggling village nearly 800 feet up on thedowns. Does the relative isolation of the church suggest a settlement which was depopulated in the Middle Ages.

Railway.  In 1898 there was a scheme to build a branch light railway line from Orpington on the South Eastern and Chatham Railway out to Tatsfield. After a public enquiry, the Commissioners finally confirmed the order to proceed on 10 June 1902. A company was formed but it failed to raise the necessary capital.
